Mechanograms (2017-). I began making GIFs in 2017 as a creatively therapeutic exercise, seeking and often even succeeding to activate and enrich the parts of my brain that compel me towards collecting, editing, and performing. This began in an effort to understand better, or at least in some novel way, the otherwise overwhelming implications of the work of artist, essayist, and filmmaker Harun Farocki; it extended back from there to the landmark documentary work of Walther Ruttmann, and from Ruttmann's own abstract work to the visionary animation of Lotte Reiniger and away from the mechanistic towards something other. I returned to the technique in order to revisit some stiller moments that I captured on film myself, and I hope to return to it soon again. In the meantime each of these series is linked below.
